Discount Grilled Bacon Snack, Guest Editors Wanted
Convenient bacon & bacon journalism.
These days when I go to the grocery store, I always take a swing by the discount sections. There are three of them, one for unrefrigerated dry goods (in the back, by the door to the rear warehouse) for things like bakery, domestic goods and boxed/canned non-perishables. Another is at one end of the rear cooler section (by yogurt), and has a random assortment of odd chilled foods, often dairy products. The clearance meat section is at one end of the butcher's section.
I watch the clearance meat carefully, but the prices never seem to go very low before the stuff gets grabbed. $1 off of a $16 steak just doesn't make me jump. The dairy section on the other hand has been the real gem. Most of these are foods that will expire in a day or so, and often are big-ticket premium items that aren't selling well in this down economy. Sometimes I find pate's, imported cheeses, expensive organic products. And this past visit, I found a pack of premium, thick-cut maple bacon in there for just over a dollar. MMmmmmm. Discount bacon.
I cooked that whole pack up on the grill after doing some sausage and corn the other night. Now I have it in a zip bag in the fridge, and I can just go have a slice of thick, chewy, maple-y bacon anytime I want. This could be habit-forming.
On another note, there is now SO much cutting-edge bacon news out there that I'm struggling to keep up with it. I'm opening up posting to other users. If you have a blog or site that covers bacon content, or just like searching out and sharing the best bacon content, I invite you to register for an account and drop me a note at pocketbacon@pocketbacon.com. I'll set you up so you too can help spread the Good Word of Bacon, worldwide. No one will be refused, as long as you are really posting good bacon info. Spammers, don't waste my time.
